Why would anybody want to play the oboe?
A video of interest to any oboe player. Made it to 100,000 views. I was surprised that this video wasn’t loaded when I searched. From a 1997 broadcast. Thanks for watching. Tell us that you play the oboe too. Or leave a comment or question. Where do you get good cane lately?

I am going to start learning how to play next week my middle school music teacher did say it would be hard
In my band, their is ONLY one oboe player, THAT ME WOOP WOOP! But I hate being the only oboe
Oboe is so hard! The reed is the worst!
I am a beginner oboe player in my schools top band and I am the only oboe!!
Lol I play oboe
That woman doesn't know anything about the flute and a perfect tone does she?
I randomly picked an instrument and liked the name oboe and little did I know what I was gonna get myself into.
I play the oboe it is amazing
I play the oboe
In my school there is only two oboe players and i am one of them the other guy is doing so bad he might get kicked out of band oh boy
Hey I just asked my band director today if I could play the oboe and because there is no oboe he almost cried.
When i started playing , i sounded like a dying goose
Honestly even I don't even know why I play the oboe. My band director was playing a broken one the first time I heard it.
I play the oboe, I got to go in trying the different instruments for band in grade school and I found it the easiest to make sound with. I couldn't blow into the flute or make tone out of the clarinet. I almost picked the sax, I could make notes with it and the keys were easier to reach. My mom said she loved the sound of the oboe, so I picked the oboe. I love my oboe. I've had it since 1989.
Hahah I play oboe and I can confirm : you have to be mad to play that :p. As a child, I had to play for 3 years before playing anything listenable, and I thought it was normal as it was the only instrument I knew. You have to build up breath and mouth strength for years just to have a good sound. And making reeds is just glorified and very complicated roulette, as only one reed in 10 is good enough. Also, you have the most solo's of any instrument in any orchestral work, so you cannot ever fail because everyone would hear it. I'm glad I didn't know all that when I started playing, otherwise, I would have quit, but now I can play oboe good enough and I love it.
I play the oboe
"We don't know where oboists come from but thank god they're here"
I remember when i was in school I wanted to play the bassoon. So I went to the music teacher and she gave me the bassoon. It was about as big as me and my hands were too small to play it. So I was tasked to play the oboe
Where is this video from originally?
Since you asked, I did it at 13 because I wanted to sit in the flute section ( because I wanted to play piccolo). I was not popular, and the oboe girl was popular by virtue of the instrument. I only do concert bands now but as soon as they know I play oboe, they won't let me play my pic. My tone was too dark and my technique wanting despite my Master's Degree. I have an AK lorée wasting away in my cupboard.
Well..its no worse than a French Horn then…and I found that easy to get used to after Tuba. I play Clarinet, too, so it can't be that bad ! And I've just bought a new Oboe too…. wish me luck !
I'm a retired oboe player. I played two Laubins in my career, by the way, and I've been to Mr. Laubin's shop. Fascinating to watch the amazing craftsmen at work. (I still have nightmares about reeds and I imagine I will to my dying day!) 🙂
gave up my dream 50 years ago and regret it so…I loved it so much; yet lived in fear of my reed drying up, cracking or just getting funky…yes, it was too risky for me..gave me anxiety!
I played in high school because Oboe players were hard to find and you were able to get into the orch faster even if you were not very good. Years later I still love the instrument but I am still a beginner. Even after 50 years of music I miss the Oboe the most.. I play the guitar/piano/drums fine. Oboe? 'Just cant get the grass reed to make any real oboe sounds.
The oboe is a screaming death stick
One of the hardest but yet sweetest sounding instruments
Me being an Oboist: Seriously, did you say trombone? PFFFT!!! Do you hear them? When I make my reeds all I do is give up and bit one. Then it fails. And I die.
I wonder what anyone here think about this:

It doesn't seems like discrimination to me.
I’m only here because everyone calls my Bassoon an Oboe… ;-;
I was asked to play because I hated playing the flute
the oboe is the absolute love of my life.
Oboe for life!
I was supposed to play the clarinet like my cousin….but my dam self changed my mind at the last second from clarinet to oboe. My god I spent my first year trying to make a sound
. But now I got it!!!!
55 years so far for me and just did Beethoven 9th at Oroville State Theatre and Paradise Performing Arts Center for the Camp Fire first responders in Paradise California. The fourth Movement oh my goodness we need all the endurance and musicality we can muster. But all that work is well worth it, it’s almost embarrassing how much attention the oboist receives. It’s really nice when members of the orchestra come up and say to you… I hope you never leave. Since I was 10 and dad a concert pianist. He said Jeff why don’t you play the oboe because hardly anybody plays it and you will get all the solos. Of course he was right. He taught harmony at Yale for Paul Hindemiths classes as a student, graduating in 3 years as a pianist. I miss him and the Concert D Steinway:) I was a spoiled young oboist lol
“The Oboe is the ill-winded instrument that nobody blows good”
Everybody can play an elbow.
I played oboe in the band Thermal Shock in San Diego on Tears For Fears and Depech Mode and they started to scream … OBOE!
We didn't choose the oboe life, the oboe life chose us
I chose the oboe in middle school band because my teachers playing sounded funny.
I was an idiot. I had no idea what I was getting into.
I am a proud 11 year old oboe player
I play oboe and I’m proud I knew this was my instrument and I love it something’s it can be a pain but I love it
I must take up Oboe , i was an indoor speed skater , the oboe equivilent in sport , the more buggerating things are the more we enjoy tgem
Oh…I play the oboe and I am is grade 4
