How to Play Son Clave – For Beginners
This is the third video that follows tips for how to play clave sticks. Its the Son Clave.
NOTE: Please disregard the statement about moving the third clave beat forward in Son.
That is incorrect you need to move the third beat back one beat from Rumba clave to Son.
I didnt want to redo the video over so I just wanted to clarify before some start commenting. Just follow my counts and it will fall into place. If we were in Europe somewhere maybe it would made sense since they drive on the other side of the road.
I shouldve just done Son Clave first.
Ill start by counting in cut-time or 8th notes for two phrases for a total of 16 beats.
This helps when learning any pattern or rhythm by taking it slow. Then Ill show you how to count it in 4/4 with the 16th notes in between.
TIP: Start by counting 8th notes cut time, then move onto 4/4 with 16th notes, then move onto counting it by feel with quarter notes only. Count: one, two, three, four and play the clave only with quarter notes.
Hope you like it and good luck in your studies.

thanks man
Great lesson(s). Thanks so much!
Great lessons for beginners! I thought you might appreciate this video (which I'll post as a "video response") that shows the lighter side of the clave tradition: "A Visit From Clave"
thanks a lot! Your video helped me so much
why are your drums so dirty?
The commentary > should make sense.. Perhaps you should use the words "hit" or "kick" , because "beat" is the 1, 2, 3, 4 etc in music theory in english
This is very helpful. Thank you for posting your clave lessons!
